AFRICA
1 Shiri beach, Fumba, Zanzibar
The mangrove-fringed beaches of Zanzibar’s southwest coast are less popular than those on the north and east, but if you’re visiting between December and February, when the northeast monsoon is blowing, this is where you want to be. The water is the same ludicrous shade of blue, the sand slightly more golden and, as Shiri beach faces west, it offers awesome sunsets. Day-trippers are unheard of and the guests at the Fumba Beach Lodge, five minutes away, seem reluctant to leave the hotel’s own perfect little strip of sand, making Shiri beach all yours.
Getting there: the signposts from the ramshackle, driftwood-built idyll of the Fumba Beach Lodge are suspiciously hard to find. Ask the owner Edwin van Zwam, to show you the way. The price is £1,442 with Expert Africa (020 8232 9777, www.expertafrica.com ).
2 Vamizi Island, Mozambique
Part managed by the Zoological Society of London, Vamizi is a favoured haunt of Nelson Mandela and the apotheosis of the African ecoresort. Just eight miles long by a mile wide, and considered among the last untouched African wildernesses, the island describes itself as “a conservation project funded through low-impact, upmarket tourism”. It goes without saying that the white-sand beaches are Bounty-bar perfect, but the biggest draw is the wildlife, with 112 avian species, samango monkeys and giant coconut crabs playing supporting roles to the main event – a pristine reef within wading distance, said to be home to more types of coral than the Great Barrier Reef, on which new marine species are still being discovered.
Getting there: to share the beach with Nelson, book a package at the
luxury Vamizi Island Lodge; £3,647 with Expert Africa (020 8232 9777, www.expertafrica.com
).
3 Nkwichi beach, Malawi
There’s something of Neverland about Nkwichi – “squeaky sand” in the local
dialect – a brilliant white beach on the rocky shores of Africa’s third
largest lake. The six chalets, with crooked terraces, are straight out of
PeterPan, and the fireflies that dart around the campfire at night are
clearly pals of Tinker Bell. All that’s missing, fortunately, is Captain
Hook and that infernal crocodile.
Getting there: Okavango Tours (020 8347 4030, www.okavango.com
) has four-night stays for £1,954pp.

Gazza, Leicester,
Resa, I'm off to Zanzibar for 4 weeks.
I'll let you know it is was horrible.
Adam, Stockholm, Sweden
Travel writers always seem to recommend Anguilla which although having beautiful beaches is basically a very flat island. Why not come to Nevis, ? great beaches , tropical rainforest around a volcano and wonderful plantation style hotels and private villas to rent. Have a look on google.
Peter Phipp, London,
A lot of these places are warm/hot but also humid. Like when you get out of the shower you are still sweating. Along with the humidity comes mosquitos too. The sun at places close to the equator will burn you bad. I think many people would prefer the warm/hot low humidity places like the desert/med.
Resa, Herstg,
If you're in North America, Florida's Scenic 30-A corridor on the Gulf of Mexico is breathtaking and you can drive there from many places in the Eastern United States.

As we say in the southern USA, y'all Come on down to the Algarve. Very uncrowded this year. As Rick Steeves proclaims, Salema is quite nice.
J. J. Drautman, Elizabethtown, KY, USA
These lists do make me laugh. In the current financial climate, couldn't you suggest something a little more affordable? We haven't all got money to burn!
Emma, Manchester, UK
Glad you didn`t mention where I live. So I won`t tell you about the great winter climate , friendly natives, brilliant beaches & scenery, service & food....oops it`s in
Martin Pyke, St Petersburg, USA
Ahh! Australia. Where to start? Hyams beach, 3 hours drive south of Sydney on Jervis Bay. Squeeky pure white silica sand. Water as clear as the maldives....and fewer people. Rent a house on the hill overlooking the beach. Fraser island, Cape Tribulation, The Whitsunday islands. So much more.
peter Moyse, Dubai, UAE
"neon lit atrocity that is phuket" Perhaps the writer should have traveled along the island a little more or maybe the lure of the red lights proved too seductive. Judging Phuket by the southern beaches of Patong, Karong etc. is like warning a visitor to Windsor of the sleaze in Soho.
martyn smith, bangkok, thailand
Has anyone who contributed to this article been to Malapascua (mentioned in Phillippines part)? Ok, looks quite nice however all accomodation is very, very basic, can't swim safely off beach (urchins hidden in seagrass). Great for scuba but that is it. Also, dynamite fishing still by locals.
Simon, Singapore,
I'm very happy you didn't mention Montego Bay, Jamaica. especially Round Hill or Mockingbird Hill Villa just across the road from Round Hill. Much better the place does not get inundated with grockles !
Nigel Bonny, San Diego , California
Thank heavens you did not mention anywhere in Australia - we want to keep it for ourselves!
