Today, the legions of diehard Star Trek fans get their first official peek into the new-look Trek universe. Curious outsiders may be enticed too. Lost creator JJ Abrams makes no pretence at being steeped in Trek lore - as many of his predecessors have been - and has made a thrill-packed science fiction action movie intended for a new generation of moviegoers rather than the Star Trek faithful.
"I want fans of Star Trek to come watch it, but the truth is I made the movie for future fans" says Abrams, who appears to have taken a few liberties with the established Trek canon. The trailers shows a distinctly emotional Spock, the Enterprise taking shape in some earthly desert rather than a space-dock, and the young James T Kirk hotrodding across Iowa in a sports car that must be (within the continuity of the film) at least a couple of centuries old.
There are scenes of wild space battles and exploding starships too, but Abrams is insistent that it’s about the characters, not the craft:
“Nobody is going to care about the ship if they don't care about the people inside"
The film is set in a period after the action of the last, rather poorly-received, Star Trek TV series Enterprise but before the first episode of the original 1966 show. The original series creator, Gene Roddenberry, was keen to demonstrate that mankind had advanced beyond the violent confrontations of the 20th Century and tried to show Kirk and his crew resolving issues peacefully rather than just storming in all phasers blazing, although there was a little of that too.
There’s certainly enough action and excitement in the new trailer to tempt those who enjoyed Abrams’s TV spy saga Alias and his cinematic take on another venerable 1960s TV series Mission Impossible. Whether he has remained faithful enough to the Roddenberry blueprint to please the countless fans of the original franchise will only be known in May next year.

Interesting. Although never judge a book by the cover! Still the trailer is action packed, and it looks like Trek fans will not be disappointed if the Director keeps up the trailer´s intensity. Good-luck
Daniel, Cannes, France
Looks like the Harry Potter of Star Trek to me, (with shades of the Phantom Menace and even Dawson's Creek thrown in) lots of teen angst, finding your place in the world, you feel out of place and different but actually your destined for great things etc etc
Not the Star Trek film I'd want to see

Its Trek Jim, but not as we know it!

"a distinctly emotional Spock..." IS Star Trek canon. Look to the original TV pilot for clues as to what Spock was like during the Chris Pike period. One classic scene has Spock shouting "The women!!" in a very emotional way. So, according to canon, Spock was still dealing with emotions at the time.
Mark, Largo, MD, USA
I would like to see Star Trek Drama, or Strar Trek political driller.. The Canon has very strong storylines in it; for instance what kind is earth live in that period- not as military but as ordinary people. As advanced that Tng charecter Picard aclaimed? That would be a true Scifi to watch ;-)

I suspect a problem might be people of a certain will spend the first half of the film thinking, "my doesn't Quinto look like Nemoy" and miss any plot?
To my mind Star Trek should remain on TV and has never really made the switch to film successfully.
Patrick, London, UK
I think you're all missing the point - this is set before the original series. But Chris Pine is about 28 and the Kirk in the series was captain in his early 30's, so it's not that ridiculous. Also, Capt. Pike is in charge (he's late 50's) with Spock second (also 50). Okay, geek rant over.
James, Newcastle,
Alex, New York, USA....that's nothing new...the average age of soldiers in WW1 was 16
Dave, Harlow, UK
Gareth,
I agree with you. The average age of a commanding officer in the U.S. Navy for a submarine is 38-42. That would make Captain Kirk in the original series a young captain. The casting of a boy in this role is ridiculous. (With no intended attack on the actor).

I was in charge of a 200 MW nuclear power plant on a Navy ship when I was 19 years old.
The truth is that the military is made up of kids, perhaps even more so 300 years from now assuming we close government schools that is, maybe kids in the future will be more advanced.
Alex, New York, USA
Can anyone explain to me why they are all teenagers? What sort of government would want to put their most inexperienced people on a high tech spacecraft?
I love a good sci-fi, but the actors here just make it look ridiculous, they should have picked men instead of boys.
Gareth, Tonbridge, UK
I'd like to see a DS9 Movie. There's lot of plot threads and stories left there. And Picard and Janeway can make Camio apperances if they want.

You'd think it should be good with all the talent and money thrown at it, but basically this is KIDS IN SPACE!
I don't want to see some pretentious self loving little brat actors.. they look like they've just stepped out of high school musical for gods sake..
R Wilson, Salisbury, UK
I prob will go and see this but it wont be the proper star trek! How dare this man degrade the idea, he should have read up on the subject and kept true to the fans as they will prob be the most who go and see it. We will see when the money stops!! cause it wont be a sucess. Keep it true
marie, Rochdale, UK
I think I have to agree. While a reboot of Classic Trek is desirable (almost any Trek is desirable), I'd like to see a new TNG movie. Patrick Stewart as Picard is just as iconic as Kirk. And the TNG crew was always interesting to watch.
Wes, Boone, United States
Picard is a legend. TNG is superior to TOS, as well as DS9 and all the other spinoffs.
Gene's magic peaked in TNG, and since 1994 only the TNG movies were worth watching out of the whole franchise.
BRING BACK PATRICK STUART. PATRICK STUART FOR PM!
Alex, London,
whilst i do not expect anything as quality as the original ST series or films, i will see it and buy it on dvd when available,i walked out on the phantom menace due to grave dissapointment only to get the trilogy on dvd ,whilst the work of jj abrams is tragic hope to see justice done here
robert, sydney, australia
I watched the trailer and the film looks great fun to me, sorry to the die hard trek fans for any loss of authentisity but as a film it looks great.
I will certainly be buying a ticket to watch.
As for Star Wars - well wasnt it the greatest film of all time - lets hope this is the same.
Peter, Aldershot, UK
I belive I have seen this film years ago. It was called ' Star Wars " !
Desmond Taylor, Houston, USA TEXAS
Don't you mean Kirk as Luke Skywalker? Picard comes a bit later. Looks good to me even though the best version of the film is often what you see in the trailer. Will be going to see it in May.
Barbara, Pittsburgh, USA
Inspired by Thunderbirds The Movie (2004). Enterprise 90210. Dawson's Spacefleet. USS Serenity. "Lost" in space. Will someone tell JJ Abrams that he should stay in television - as if MI3 wasn't proof enough. Plastic. Hopeless. Nonsense. At least that's my first impression. Could be wrong. Not.
Dead Bear Reviews, London, UK
Does anyone else thing that the trailer makes it seem like Star WARS-only with Picard as Luke Skywalker?
H. Stevenson, thornage, Norfolk
Delbert, it's a phenomenon that affects film characters from time to time. I remember Davy Crockett having a wild front ear...
Mike McGovern, York,
Looks really good to me - but will I be able to forget that one of the main characters is Sylar!!!!
Patricia Smith, Beccles, United Kingdom
The new trailer for the new Star Trek movie looks great to me. I heard that Spock has a baby in this film, but with three ears! A left ear, a right ear, and a final front ear...
